What is Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy, also known as speech-language therapy, is a therapeutic process aimed at diagnosing, assessing, and treating communication and speech disorders. This form of therapy addresses a wide range of difficulties, including speech sound production, language development, fluency (stuttering), voice quality, and communication disorders resulting from conditions such as developmental delays, neurological disorders, stroke, hearing impairments, and various other issues. The primary goal of speech therapy is to improve an individual’s ability to communicate effectively and clearly, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life and participation in social, educational, and professional activities. Speech therapists, or speech-language pathologists, are trained professionals who provide these services and tailor their approaches to the specific needs of each patient.

Speech and language
Receptive and expressive disorders are both types of communication disorders that affect language development and usage, particularly in children but also in adults. Here are the definitions of each:
1. Receptive Language Disorder: This refers to difficulties in understanding or processing language. Individuals with receptive language disorder may have trouble comprehending spoken language, following instructions, or understanding the meaning of words or sentences. They might struggle with tasks such as answering questions, identifying objects or concepts, or understanding complex sentences.
2. Expressive Language Disorder: This refers to difficulties in expressing thoughts, ideas, and feelings through language. People with expressive language disorder may have trouble forming sentences, using correct grammar, or finding the right words to convey their thoughts. They might speak in short, simple sentences or have a limited vocabulary.
Fluency/Stuttering
Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by interruptions in the flow of speech, including repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words, prolongations of sounds, and blocks where the speaker is unable to produce sounds.
Articulation and Phonological Delays
Articulation delay refers to difficulties in producing speech sounds correctly due to immature or underdeveloped motor skills involved in speech production.
Phonological delay involves challenges in understanding and implementing the sound system of a language, leading to errors in speech patterns and difficulty with speech intelligibility.
Pragmatic/Social language
Pragmatic delay refers to difficulties in understanding and using social communication skills appropriately in various contexts, such as following conversational rules, understanding nonverbal cues, and adjusting language based on the listener’s needs or the social situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I expect my speech treatment to take?
The length of time in speech therapy depends on the individual’s needs.
What should be expected in speech therapy sessions?
Once impairment is identified, Speech Language Pathologists will design a program of activities to improve the targeting areas of speech, language and/or voice. Therapy may focus on better comprehending and/or expressing language, improving social skills, and articulating speech sounds.
In addition, families will receive home exercise programs or activities to reinforce skills addressed during treatment sessions.
